Hello my lovely readers and fellow book-lovers! For those of you who are new here, I, your peace-desiring host Patricia Parrington, have the pleasure of interviewing characters from books all over the world.

Today we have here with us Felicity Craig from the adult fantasy series Spectral Braver by Tiago R. Resende. Tiago is a 45-year-old bilingual Portuguese indie author. He’s the creator of the ultimate ghostly heroic saga, Spectral Braver.

Note: There maybe be some spoilers in the interview below.

Meet Felicity

Welcome to Fable Features!

[Patricia and her guest sit on a matching pair of orange suede couches. Patricia smooths out the skirt of her mahogany dress and smiles at her guest.]

I’m so happy you came today. Tell me, what was your family like growing up?

[Felicity bows and clasps her hands.]

Oh, Miss Patricia, I’m so overwhelmed to be in this position! Please don’t take offense, but it is my husband who usually handles speaking with the living from this timeline. I often struggle with your modern utterances, so please bear with me, I’ll do my best! I am very grateful for this unique opportunity!

Well, I grew up with my father, he raised me as an only child after the passing of my mother. He told me many stories about our old family, the Stenberg aett, and provided me with all a young lady could ever hope for . . . including her own misguided wishes. Oh, I miss him so . . . but he’s with Mama now, so all is well. I can only hope I made him proud after my own passing. I would say, growing up to see our Craig Manor become a symbol of our principles filled me with pride and a sense of duty, which I shall always carry with my name. While I was rather despised as a child in Sleepy Hollow (as I tended to eat just a bit too much, haha), Papa taught me to carry my own weight, so I tended to our fields and the gardens from an early age. I think I did well, but even so, it was not enough. I . . . I was too young to understand love perhaps and I chose the wrong man, so . . . But everything is alright now! In a way, I mean. I have met my untimely demise as I’m sure you’ve noticed by now.

[She coyly looks to the side.]

Yes, I did notice you appeared a bit different from my living guests.

[Patricia cocks her head, curious.]

Is it alright if I ask how you met your demise?

I have made my peace with it. Jack . . . He was a weak man, in his spirit, you see? So while I was fooled into believing he loved me, I could always sense that something was wrong, especially after my youngest, Lydia, was born. It wasn’t long after my father passed in the Civil War that his demeanor changed and so . . .

[Felicity lowers her gaze.]

He tried to destroy us, both me and the children. The demon who possessed him to commit such a horror only saw a path to him because he didn’t believe in us, he didn’t love us . . .

[She raises her indigo eyes in resolve.]

Yet, the House of Craig prevailed. Our righteousness and our love lives beyond our graves. We put whatever that THING was they made from Jack’s foolish soul back into Hell where it belonged.

Thank you for sharing. That must have been terrifying in the moment! I’m glad the House of Craig prevailed.

[Patricia adjusts the pillows on the couch.]

Hmm, our next question is an interesting one. What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever worn?

. . . M-my b-bed linens.

[Felicity springs up.]

What manner of question is this, anyhow?!

[She flaps her fan strongly to cool her face.]

W-well, th-that’s all. I assure you, Miss. I am a lady of good repute! It was just a s-spur of the moment thing, I was worried about a friend and—We should move on! Next question, please!

[Patricia smiles.]

No worries! We can certainly go on to the next question.

Who do you usually turn to for help?

[Felicity cups her face.]

Oh, my dearest Ben. My, he is so . . . He always knows what to do and what to say. Have you ever been in love, Miss Patricia, truly?

[Patricia shakes her head ruefully.]

Oh, it’s so . . . magical. I am so fortunate that he came to our manor. He . . . he changed everything. Bless him and bless Mrs. Freeman for bringing such a wonderful man into the World. He is the strongest and the bravest, and I truly would not be in this position were it not for him. He really doesn’t get enough credit!

Wow, he sounds like an amazing man! I’m so glad you get to have him in your life.

What’s something hard you faced recently?

Ben had to go after my dearest confidant, Jorōgumo, and I wasn’t sure if they would make it out the Abyss safely. He was so determined that I really had no choice in the matter but to trust him. The hardest about it was to not fall apart, quite frankly. I was SO worried for them . . . But for the sake of the children—and everyone else, really—I had to ensure that wasn’t so. I prayed that everything would be well. By God’s mercy, those prayers were indeed answered and as a result, there are now fewer things in this Greater Realm that frighten me. And it’s all thanks to my dearest.

That sounds like a tense, trying time. Could you tell me more about this Abyss? What exactly is it?

You would call it Hell. It is a gigantic spiritual construct, spanning the totality of the Earth. Demons come from this gruesome place and while not all of them are foul and cruel, sadly most can’t respect our ways topside. They want to consume us and you. And I cannot let that happen anymore, for it has gone on for far too long.

[Felicity grabs the interviewer’s hands.]

Please Miss Patricia, while this is rather irregular for us to speak in this manner, please understand that the living MUST be good. You mustn’t be cruel and destroy lives, no matter how righteous your reasons may be, because violent deaths always beckon to this horrible place and it grows stronger, every single time you do it. You have to be better people. We’ve almost lost everything because of the Abyss, and most of you don’t even realize this from where you dwell. I beg of you, do your part to stop Evil for the living as well. For the Dream of Peace. For us all.

[Patricia squeezes Felicity’s hands reassuringly.]

I promise, I will do my part. I don’t want the Abyss growing stronger either!

Onto a more lighthearted topic, what’s your favorite bird?

[Felicity contemplates for a moment]

Never really gave it much thought, I loved all kinds of animals when Sleepy Hollow was a very different place. But I’ve come to develop a deep appreciation for crows. These are nobler birds than most would care to admit. They herd souls to the right place, and I am deeply grateful to have been at the mercy of one, when it counted. See, a crow saved my boy. I will never forget this for as long as I live—Well, as long as I exist. Pardon me, after all this time I still speak as if I’m alive, haha. Ben mocks me often for this, the big meanie. Hahaha!

[Patricia chuckles as well.]

I would probably do the same if I were in your position. After a lifetime of talking about yourself as if you were alive, it would be quite difficult to change that around!

[Patricia leans forward.]

I would love to hear more about this crow who saved your boy. What happened? How did the crow save him?

Gunnar’s soul was vanishing after being attacked by Belial the Faith Eater, and the crow spirited him away to deal with the matter. Even if he . . . even if Phantom Crow lost everything that made him a man, he never lost his sense of duty to protect souls in this Greater Realm. I often think if I’m worthy enough to rise up to his stoic example . . .

[Felicity draws an abashed smile.]

But Ben has to shake me whenever I come to think like this, because we have indeed honored his legacy. His and Granny Crow’s. We will never stop helping others, even if some believe it to be futile in this place. The Dream of Peace is the right thing to follow, and it isn’t just an ideal to keep everyone safe. It is our better nature, that which commands it, I believe. He saved my boy because that’s what I would do for anyone else’s child. Even if I had no thoughts anymore, I’d still do it, like he did. Bless him. Bless them both.

[She tears up.]

[Patricia tears up a little too, then lets out a breath.]

Wow, what a sacrifice. Thank you for sharing that. It’s very inspiring.

Now I’d love to hear, what was the situation where you laughed the hardest you ever have?

[Felicity giggles.]

Oh, everyone still laughs about it, to this very day. Our dear Jim explained to us what the Breaches are—and of course Ben had to make it into this really crass thing—oh, hahaha! It was terrible! To equate that awful thing from Hell with a woman’s, well . . . I can’t even say it, it was SO bad! Hahahaha!!! I swear, no matter how much I desperately try to hold to decorum, that devious boy always finds a way to make me think about the nastiest things!

Wow, Ben. What a thing to compare it to!

[Patricia shakes her head with a laugh.]

What would you say you struggle with the most?

Well . . . doing this thing that I do, of rescuing the cursed . . . it often leads me to have to send them into the Light. I know it is their wish to be with their loved ones in the Hereafter, but . . . it is such joy, only to see it become a goodbye. I always need Ben by my side in these affairs, because there is a rather selfish side of me that wishes they would stay. But I understand. I’ve come to realize that all of them are with us, in our hearts, so all is well . . . But it always hurts, even if a little. Saying farewell is difficult for me. It always was.

[Felicity wipes a tear.]

I think that would be very difficult me too if I were in your position. But it sounds like you do a wonderful job and have a great man by your side to help you through it.

[Patricia glances at her wrist.]

Hmm, I think we can squeeze in one last question.

If the world was going to explode and you could only bring one person with you on the escape pod, who would it be and why?

[She springs up again.]

OH MY! W-what is this “escape pod” thing?! Well, I’ll have you know that I, Felicity of the House of Craig, am not one to shirk my duties and behave cowardly! Escape is not a choice I would ever make, nor my dear, courageous Family! If the World was indeed bound for destruction, we would have to find a way to stop it! Absolutely! One of us always knows a way to resolve even the most desperate of situations, and I would trust any of them to stay and fight for you. So don’t ever fear for such a thing, Miss Patricia, we would do everything in our power to stop it!

B-by the way, this isn’t actually going to happen any time soon, I trust? It’s that your world already has seen so much calamity that I . . . Ahem . . . Anyhow, it will be fine! No matter how many things threaten our World, the Crow People and I shall stand in your defense!

Don’t worry! It’s just a hypothetical situation. And that’s very reassuring to hear you would defend our world from calamity.

[Patricia stands.]

Thank you so much, Felicity, for chatting with me today! It was great getting to know you.

[Felicity stands up and bows.]

You go with my best wishes, my dear. Take this:

[She extends a red petal toward the interviewer.]

If you ever feel like something’s wrong in your dwellings, call my name. I shall appear without delay and handle it. I am here for your sake as well. Be well, my sweet Patricia, be seeing you!

[Patricia accepts the red petal.]

Thank you so much! I appreciate it and will call for you if something goes wrong. Enjoy the rest of your evening!

End of interview.
