November Character Interview

Patricia Parrington ~ November 15, 2024

Hello my lovely readers and fellow book-lovers! For those of you who are new here, I, your fantastic host, Patricia Parrington, have the pleasure of interviewing characters from books all over the world.

Today we have here with us Amelia from the book The Reject Society by Marissa. Marissa loves to read and write, and if she’s not doing that, she’s watching YouTube!

Meet Amelia

[Patricia flops onto an orange suede couch opposite her guest and smooths out the skirt of her dress.]

Welcome to Fable Features!

So tell me—what would you do on a free afternoon in the middle of the week?

[A male is next to Amelia, making sure a machine next to her is hooked up right and that the tube under her nose is set right. She giggles at him telling him that she is fine and to relax. He kisses the top of her head and apologizes to Patricia before rushing to sit down out of the way.]

Hello, sorry about that, he likes to triple-check that I have oxygen pumping to me. We have had a couple of close calls and now he is super overprotective.

Well, I am normally not doing too much. I hang out with Marc and the guys. We have a group called the Reject Society. It's a weird name but it is us. We hang out in the common rooms in the hospital and sometimes Marc will take me to the garden, and I can paint outside or sit and let the wind hit my face. Oh, one time we had a food fight in the cafeteria! Nurse Jodi made us clean it up but that was fun.

Sorry, I ramble at times.

[Amelia’s cheeks turn a slight shade of pink.]

Feel free to ramble on! I love listening to people’s stories.

[Patricia smiles warmly.]

I’d love to hear more about this “Reject Society” group. How did that come into being? It sounds like you guys have quite a bit of fun.

Well, the group came to me.

[Amelia giggles.]

I was being wheeled into the current hospital in my bed when Marc, Tyler, and Ethan saw me. After some talking with Nurse Jodi, they came to be and asked if I wanted to be part of The Reject Society. We all have something wrong with us that is forcing us to live in the hospital, and some days we feel like we are rejects in the world. I don’t have many friends, and no one really knows of me unless they are a doctor or a nurse. It is nice to be around a group of people my age who feel the same way and go through the same thoughts. We don’t say our group’s name out loud a lot, the nurses don’t like it, but it is how we feel some days.

I can’t imagine how hard that must be. I’m glad you have this group of people you can relate to—sounds like it helps a lot.

Why don’t we move on to our next question? What’s your favorite memory?

When I was in my last hospital, my dad found this PT room that was not being used a lot. He would wheel me into the room and have me sit on the floor. I would act like a goalie as he softly kicked balls towards me. It was a lot of fun.  I wasn’t able to get up to run around but it did cause me to get winded from time to time.

Your father sounds amazing. That was very kind of him to do that with you.

Here’s our next question: Have you ever epically failed at something?

Does breathing count?

[In the back, Marc facepalms, making Amelia giggle.]

[Patricia hides a chuckle.]

Well, I suppose it would! Having trouble breathing sounds like it would be scary.

What’s the strangest or scariest situation you ever found yourself in?

Being moved to a new hospital is always scary. But I think maybe when Tim at my old hospital wanted to play with my air machine while I was sleeping. Thankfully when I went to sleep, I switched the wires to the wall air machine. When I woke up, Tim had the other one in 100 pieces all over the floor! Everyone tried to help put it back together, even calling the company, but nothing could be done. I had to stay in my bed for a week until the new machine arrived.

[Patricia’s eyes widen.]

Oh no! That’s not good. Why did Tim take apart your machine? Was he bored?

Tim is a special kind of person; he didn’t mean to do it. He just wanted to learn how it worked. He doesn’t talk much but when he has his eye on something he will do it. He made me a card saying sorry that he broke my machine which was sweet. I know he didn’t mean to break it, but we definitely had to watch him more closely to make sure he didn’t take anything else apart.

He gave you an apology card? That’s so sweet! I’m glad he didn’t actually mean to break it.

[Patricia adjusts a couch pillow.]

Hmm, I kinda like this next question: What is the weirdest thing you have seen in someone else’s home?

Um, well, with my condition I am not able to leave the hospital as much. But I did get to see a dead butterfly pinned to wall of one of my doctor’s office! It was creepy!

That would be creepy!

[Patricia cocks her head, thinking.]

If you could choose to be famous for something, what would it be?

Oh, that is easy! My artwork! I love to paint in the cute little room Marc set up for me with the help of Nurse Jodi!

I love art, too. Do you have a favorite thing to paint?

I do a lot of portraits! I am working on all my friends and some nurses! The garden outside is fun to do as well! Honestly, once the brush hits the canvas, I get lost. It is like it is just me and the paint and nothing is wrong with me. I don’t have an illness that is stopping me from living my life. I get that I am only seventeen years old, but I do wonder what it is like to be outside painting other things. Sorry. I am doing it again! I am getting off topic!

[Patricia waves aside her concerns.]

I would be wondering the same thing if I were in your shoes. I think that’s great you get to escape through painting! It is such a wonderful activity.

So we’ve talked about some of your struggles already. What would you say you struggle with the most?

Again, breathing.

[Amelia giggles.]

Um, probably paying attention in class. I am almost done with school, but I just want to be out of the classroom. I want to be out in the world, but I need special permission to be out of the hospital.

[Patricia nods.]

I was the same way when I was in school.

Here’s the last question for today: What quality do you value most in a friend?

Someone who has a great heart, can make me laugh, they understand that I am trying my best with the cards I have been dealt. Opps, you said one, I am sorry I am rambling again.

[Patricia smiles and waves aside her concerns once again.]

Those are all great traits to value in a friend.

[Patricia stands.]

It was really great getting to know you, Amelia! I hope you always have amazing friends at your side.

End of interview.
