June Character Interview
Patricia Parrington ~ June 15, 2025

Hello my lovely readers and fellow book-lovers! For those of you who are new here, I, your fabulous host Patricia Parrington, have the pleasure of interviewing characters from books all over the world.
Today we have here with us Sunny from the adult fiction novel Sunny Side Lost (wt) by Grace Cultivar. Grace is a proud Florida native who enjoys writing and painting about nature, food, and culture. She loves spending time with her family and going to church.
Meet Sunny
Welcome to Fable Features!
[Patricia settles onto an orange suede couch and smiles at her guest.]
Tell me a little bit about where you’re from. Do you have many good memories from there?
Hi!
[Sunny sets her tattered satchel bag down by her feet.]
Yes, I am from a small river town in Florida. We spend a lot of time learning about the lagoon and trying to protect it. I have memories of feeding the manatees fresh lettuce. Right before they would surface, we’d see giant oval shapes below pockets of bubbles. Then the manatees would come up to breathe and exhale the stinkiest bit of air. You could almost see their sea cow smile as they munched the lettuce leaves.
I must say, feeding wildlife is not good practice and can get you in trouble but I think we’ve all done it once or twice as kids.
[Patricia’s green eyes widen.]
Whoa, you got to feed manatees? I have to confess, I’m a little jealous.
Speaking of feeding things, what’s your favorite food?
[Sunny squints her eyes and tilts her head.]
I love all foods and cuisines. How could I ever pick just one? Well, I could never turn down my mom’s mofongo, which is a mashed plantain dish paired with chicharrones—crispy pig skin. It is savory and delicious.
[Sunny’s tummy growls.]
That does sound delicious. I might have to get the recipe from you so I can try it!
What’s a sound you’ll never forget?
I will never forget the sound of parakeets telling me a secret for the first time. I had them as pets when I was small. They had the prettiest little chirps that could make your day. If you didn’t listen close enough, you’d never know they whisper messages during the new moon.
On this particular new moon, the parakeets told me that my eldest sister was getting married. News to us, she had eloped!
I’ve never heard of parakeets telling secrets like that! How mysterious. I’ll have to listen to one next time there’s a new moon. Do you think you’d ever get a parakeet again?
I would love to have parakeets again, one day. I could use their revelations right about now. They are quite messy, though, and I don’t miss cleaning their cages.
That would be handy, having a creature who can give you insight on life.
Sadly I wouldn’t be able to have a parakeet.
[Patricia sighs and shakes her head ruefully.]
Scribblemore, my pet pseudodragon, would just eat it.
Do you have any hobbies? Or a hobby you wish you had time for?
If only dragons existed in my world, I could make a great escape.
All of my time is taken up by pre-medicine studies. I wish I had time to study film or film photography. Watching short indie films is my thing. I’ve never told anybody that before!
[Sunny presses her fingers to her closed lips, to “shush.”]
Your secret is safe with me.
[Patricia glances around the study, as if looking for eavesdroppers, then leans forward.]
Can I ask why you chose to study pre-medicine instead of film or photography?
I want to make my parents proud. Like they always say, “passion does not pay the bills.” College seems like the place to start a stable life, and healthcare would probably be more helpful than playing with cameras.
[Sunny sighs deeply.]
Ahh, that makes sense. It can be hard to make a stable living in that kind of field. But you know? Sometimes it’s worth it. Especially if you’re doing what you love.
[Patricia shrugs then grins.]
What’s a funny or embarrassing thing that happened to you?
I like to try new styles every once in a blue moon. That’s why I was often late for class. I was trying to find the perfect shoes to go with these vintage polka-dotted capris. Lo and behold, after ten minutes, I found a pair of brand-new flats with unfortunately low-tread soles. Super cute, yet impractical.
My dorm mate was waiting at the bottom of the stairs for me. When I realized I was making her late, I kicked my speed up a notch.
[Sunny giggles preemptively.]
Literally, though, I kicked my foot right past the step below me. Missing the step after that. I slid on my back all the way to the bottom of the stairwell. My polka pants were stained along the backside and yes, I am sure everyone on campus noticed.
Oh no!
[Patricia laughs and sympathetically rubs her back.]
That probably left a bruise.
Who or what do you miss?
[Sunny looks down. She swallows.]
I miss my family, my parents, and my sisters. I never thought I would get stuck here and I didn’t mean to leave on these terms.
That sounds really hard. What happened, if you don’t mind me asking?
I am ashamed to admit that I left. I left Florida to uncover a family mystery that they swore was nothing. Now, I am in Puerto Rico during the middle of hurricane season with no electricity or money. I got myself trapped on the island. My family must be so worried, they don’t even know where I am.
[Patricia’s brow creases with concern.]
That’s scary! I hope you’re able to find a way back to your family. You must really miss them, too.
What was the best compliment you’ve ever received?
My new friend, Josue, told me I am a great listener. I think it stood out to me because he’s the greatest listener I’ve ever met.
[Patricia smiles.]
You do seem like a good listener! And we certainly need more of those in this world.
Looks like we have time for one last question! What advice would you give your younger self?
I would tell my younger self to ask more questions and stop making assumptions about life. Sometimes it’s natural to jump to conclusions, but usually it causes an unideal chain of events. Maybe my younger self is just a few months younger than me, right now. I could have used this advice several weeks ago.
[Sunny’s face settles into a humble smile.]
It’s always in hindsight we realize these things, huh? Well that’s really good advice.
[Patricia stands.]
Thanks for coming out today, Sunny! I enjoyed getting to chat with you. I hope the rest of school goes well!
It was so nice meeting you, Patricia. I think I’ll take a film class after all. See you!
End of interview.
