May Character Interview
Patricia Parrington ~ May 15, 2025

Hello my lovely readers and fellow book-lovers! For those of you who are new here, I, your comfy host Patricia Parrington, have the pleasure of interviewing characters from books all over the world.
Today we have here with us Haru Nakagami from the adult political thriller Mister Nakagami by Jade Black. Jade is a writer, artist, composer, and game developer. When not quietly plotting to take over the world, she likes to play puzzle games, listen to jazz, and build miniatures!
Meet Haru
Welcome to Fable Features!
[Patricia and her guest sit down onto a matching pair of orange suede couches. Patricia taps a white crocheted blanket that drapes along the back of her couch.]
My sister made me this. Do you have any family? What are they like, if you don’t mind me asking?
[Haru smiles]
It’s lovely. That’s nice of her. I have a lot of blood family; I’m the youngest of four and two of them have children now. I’m close with my dad and was with my mum. He’s gentle and she was formidable and they love us all so much. My sisters . . .
[Haru’s smile fades.]
Well, Yuzuki died when I was young, and I haven’t spoken to either of the others in a long time now. I never got on with Akari, but Suzu was all right until she married. There was always some tension growing up, I was the youngest by eight years and my dad always wanted a son. I thought it would clear up eventually but I guess not.
Sounds like a complicated family dynamic. I’m sorry to hear there’s some tensions between you.
[Haru nods with a small smile.]
What’s your favorite memory?
[Haru sips the tea]
Hmm, it’s tough to think of one that won’t make Jade twitchy about spoilers! When I first met my friend Isamu, all I knew was he worked in the jazz bar. Then when I first went, there he was on stage with his guitar! And he’s really good too! It was so cool to realize my friend was so talented.
[Patricia takes a sip of tea as well.]
That would be cool to find out! How long have you known Isamu?
Oh, good question. I think I first met him when he was sixteen? He was about that age. I thought he was older, I had no idea until years later. So by now, over twenty years.
[Haru blinks.]
Wow! That’s a long time. You two must be very close.
Do you have any tattoos, scars, or birthmarks?
I have my share of scars from my school years; being the shortest made me easy pickings. I don’t have any tattoos yet, but I do have one planned. It’ll cover the scars. It’s big, so it’s going to hurt, but it’ll be worth it.
[Patricia leans forward a bit, curious.]
What will this tattoo look like? I don’t have one yet either, but I’ve always been interested.
It’s going to be a few branches of a peach blossom tree. They’re my favorite flowers. It’s going to be in semi silhouette, so quite striking black and pink.
That sounds beautiful. I think I would like something floral like that, too.
What’s a lie you’ve had to combat?
Just one?
[Haru laughs.]
Besides all of Aoyama’s nonsense, one that comes up a lot is the church’s view on morality. They label a lot of perfectly normal and reasonable behavior as disgusting, and it’s caused a lot of problems for me as a human rights specialist and personally. They’re a very vocal minority and it’s very annoying.
That sounds like a difficult thing to combat.
What’s the best joke or prank you’ve been a part of?
I don’t know if it technically counts, but it was funny. Shortly after I hired my assistant we went to Kayna. Their mythology has merfolk deities, and it turns out he’s creeped out by merfolk. At one point we dodged into a shop to escape the heat; I happened across some . . . clothing and couldn’t resist showing him. I’m not sure he slept that night.
[Haru chuckles.]
[Patricia shakes her head and chuckles.]
Oh, your poor assistant.
What’s a line you would never cross?
This is a question I’ve had to face a lot, and I’ve rarely been happy with my answers.
[Haru tips his head.]
I wouldn’t sacrifice a family member if there was any way to avoid it. And I mean real family, not the people I’m supposed to call family.
I like that you’re not willing to sacrifice those closest to you. Who would you say is part of your real family right now?
My dad and my mum always will be. My assistant, Ai, for sure and Isamu as well. There’s certainly an argument for my old mentor Hamasaki, but I try not to be presumptuous with it.
Ahh, probably best not to assume. Sounds like a wonderful family!
What place would you like to visit someday?
I’ve been lucky to be able to travel a lot, though mostly for work. I’ve never been to Basanne, so I’m curious about there, but I won’t get in. No one does. I would like to spend more time in Quiyen-Xuong, I like how close it feels to home but with better weather.
Better weather is always a plus!
[Patricia takes another sip of her tea then sets it down on the coffee table.]
We have time to squeeze in one last question, so here it is: What does perfect happiness look like to you?
I’ve always wanted to live peacefully with a husband. Just us and maybe a cat or two. I’d like to find out more about the past if I get the opportunity; I’m fascinated by Imperial times. I wouldn’t mind my dad coming to live with us if he wants to.
That sounds like an amazing life. And I hope you do get to find an amazing husband and get to learn more about the past!
[Patricia stands.]
Thank you for coming out today, Haru. It was a pleasure getting to know you!
[Haru stands as well.]
Thank you for having me! It was nice to talk to you too, I appreciate how open-minded you’ve been.
End of interview.
