March Character Interview

Patricia Parrington ~ March 24, 2025

Hello my lovely readers and fellow book-lovers! For those of you who are new here, I, your amazing host Patricia Parrington, have the pleasure of interviewing characters from books all over the world.

Today we have here with us Jen Lancaster from the YA fantasy series Sky Jewel Legacy by Gregory Heal. Gregory is a fantasy author who writes clean YA fantasy.

Meet Jen

[Patricia and her guest enter the studio and settle onto a pair of orange suede couches. Patricia tucks a strand of green hair behind one ear.]

Welcome to Fable Features!

I’m excited to get to know you. Tell me, what would you do on a free afternoon in the middle of the week?

I’d probably go for a run if the weather was nice, then meet up with my best friend for a cup of coffee.

That sounds like fun. Tell me more about this best friend—how’d you two meet?

Her name is Courtney and we met during freshman orientation at NYU. She is also from my hometown of Erie, PA, so we immediately had something in common.

That’s always nice to meet someone you have something in common with. Which can make for some great memories! Speaking of which, what’s your favorite memory?

When I got admitted into NYU for college. My goal was to major in biology and then go to medical school to be a neurosurgeon.

Wow, that definitely would be exciting!

Have you ever epically failed at something?

I always try to undertake challenges that aren’t too big just so I know I have a good chance of succeeding. But that hasn’t stopped me from failing along the way. I’ve learned that failures should be welcomed because they teach you lessons you can apply to future opportunities.

[Patricia nods.]

Absolutely. Is there a particular failure that comes to mind that taught you a good lesson?

The first season I tried out for rugby, I came into a team where the other girls had been playing for years, so the learning curve was steeper for me. I’ve always played more individual sports, so during out matches I felt bad when I would mess up a pass or give up the ball. Our record wasn’t good, and through those losses, it made me determined to get better each game and that at the end of the day, it is all about having fun. The subsequent seasons, I did see an improvement in my play, and the other girls started to trust me more. It was a great feeling!

That must’ve been hard in the meantime, though, learning to not get down on yourself whenever you made a mistake.

Transitioning from sports over to weather and the divisions of the year, what’s your favorite season?

I’m an autumn girl. I love the changing of leaves and coffee on a brisk morning as the sun rises.

The leaves look so beautiful during autumn, don’t they? You must be a morning girl, then, if you like watching the sun rise while enjoying a cup of coffee.

[Patricia laughs and shakes her head.]

Me on the other hand? It takes me forever to wake up and be a functioning human being. But let’s get back to you! If you had to name one thing about you that stands out from others, what would that be?

Physically, it’s my eyes. I have violet eyes with flecks of gold. I have yet to meet anyone who shares that feature with me.

But as a person, I would say that I am fairly calm and collected. It would take a lot to rattle me.

[Patricia leans forward.]

Wow yeah, I’ve never seen eyes like yours. Very beautiful!

[She settles back against the orange suede couch.]

What’s a scent you will never forget?

The smell of my parents’ boat the first time we pull it out of storage at the start of the summer

That’s a unique scent! Sounds like it’s connected to some good memories. Do you still go out on that boat with your parents now?

Most definitely. I love being on the water. My dad taught me to waterski when I was a kid, and now I progressed into slalom skiing, which is when you are pulled behind the boat with only one ski. I also love to sunbathe on the bow of our speed boat.

That sounds like so much fun! You must have incredible balance, too, to be able to that on one ski.

If you could choose to be famous for something, what would it be?

For a medical breakthrough in the field of neuroscience. I love helping people.

That would be wonderful!

[Patricia taps her wrist.]

Looks like we have time for one last question: What quality do you value most in a friend?

Communication. A relationship has the best chance at being sustainable if both individuals are able to communicate their feelings and have a foundation of respect for the other person’s ideals and thoughts.

Well said! Communication is such an important thing to have in any relationship.

It was so lovely getting to know you, Jen. Thanks for coming out today!

End of interview.
